The children replied, “Father, we will take care of the work. All the property is yours. You may use it the way you want to.” So this farmer established a small mango nursery in his field. When the plants were ready for transplantation, he would carry a few of the saplings with him and go from village to village and tell the farmers, “You should do some such thing so as to leave your memories behind.” Of course, the people would look at him in sheer wonder. But he pleaded on, “I have brought some mango saplings and it will be very good on your part if you could spare some space in your field and grow an orchard.” This impressed everyone and he developed in that area not one or two or ten, twenty or hundred but a thousand and more orchards. Village to village he went around convincing people to make their lives more useful not only for themselves but also for others.
Be Useful to Others: When you came to this world, you got all the facilities, well-arranged things and a neat and clean environment. It is your duty, therefore, to do something good for the coming generation too. So get going and do something and make your old age useful. It is of no use sitting with heads hanging down and complaining that we have retired, that old age has come, that the body has become sick and the children don’t cooperate. There’s no use saying that we don’t have enough money and hence what service can we do for others? This kind of a person can do nothing.
Look at this farmer Hazaari, who, single-handedly, developed over a thousand orchards. When he died people from all around came for his funeral to bid him farewell. They said that this man hasn’t died, that he has taught others how to live. Such a person cannot be considered dead. He is living in the form of the swaying greenery all around. He is evergreen like the orchards he helped create. When India was reorganized into different states, at that time the province of Bihar was also made. Within Bihar, that particular district was named Hazaribagh after that farmer Hazaari – one who even made the word ‘hazaar’ [thousand] meaningful.
Make Life Worth Living: You can do good at any age. If you have started something good and leading a life worth living, this means that you will develop your personality by doing much more penance; you have started multiplying. You were small and you just became big. If you don’t observe this kind of discipline, you will get reduced from greatness to pettiness. Whichever stage of life you are in, start progressing just from that point onwards. Not for yourself alone, but start living for the entire world. And then you will see the heights that you reach in life, the culmination of which would be when you start sharing with others whatever it is that you own.
