Guru Vashisht was a great awakened saint, knower of universal knowledge. While guiding his disciples on the path of salvation he told them, “Every person is imprisoned in his own environment. He wants to get out of it and tries hard but cannot succeed. This is because each and every person has his own limitations and compulsions. It is not possible to get out of these limitations.” To move towards salvation every traveler has to encounter four doorkeepers. If he gets to know them and becomes aware of them, the path towards salvation becomes a lot easier.
It is said that you should become aware of them and overcome your limitations. First of all try to get rid of all impediments and worldly disturbances and rise mentally. Then you will encounter your attributes and wrong doings of past lives. With penance and meditation you will be motivated and encouraged to undertake your journey towards the achievement of salvation. Salvation is, of course, not so easy to attain. You have to work hard to achieve it.
The first doorkeepers to the path of salvation you will encounter is Peace [Shanti]. First of all install peace in your mind and then bring peace in the family. Bring peace and calmness in your behavior. Everyone wants to be peaceful but the people around do not allow the person to be peaceful. With a lack of inner calm and balance there cannot be any peace. Therefore, try to earn peace and be peaceful. This is the first step. The first step, therefore, is peace. This is the first doorkeeper to the abode of salvation.
The power of good thought [Vichar] is great in the world. This is the second doorkeepers. Due to the revolutionary thoughts many powerful regimes have fallen to destruction in the world. Never underestimate the power of your thought. Your thought should be pure, fair, bold and strong. Remember this always – never allow wrong thoughts enter your ears and mind and heart. These distract your thoughts and mind. These pollute your actions. You should filter all the thoughts before they enter your mind. Be on guard what you should listen; what should be your
thoughts and what you should read and what not to read. Weaken the wrong and unworthy thoughts and do not let them enter your mind.
The thoughts which generate negative attitudes do not allow them to enter your mind. Accept those thoughts which inspire you and empower you. Remember that when you go to the Guru, humbly accept and absorb all thoughts which he gives you. This is the guidance which converts an ordinary person into a wise and extraordinary one. This is the ‘Guru Mantra’.
The third doorman to the abode of salvation is Satisfaction [Santosh]. Satisfaction is to remain satisfied and is regarded as another doorkeeper. When you seek blessings of peace from God, do also solicit the blessing of satisfaction from him. This also makes a person restless and unsatisfied. Any person who is satisfied is generally peaceful. He remains content.
Let us reconsider this aspect in a different way – any person who remains peaceful while eating enjoys good health. It has been said that a person should not remain contented while making efforts, gaining knowledge and doing devotion. It has to be a continuous process.
Fourth and the last door guard is the company of the knowledgeable and saints [‘Satsang]. The company of such wise people fills the life with devotion and love for God. There should be a prayer, “O God, please give me the company of awakened and knowledgeable saints. Give me the privilege to be in the company of those who are in your service. Whatever height I acquire for myself in life, let my forehead remain bowed to your lotus feet always.
Let there be encouragement to me so that I remain attached to the lives of heroes, people with high values and ideals, religious icons and good intentioned persons.” Peace, good thoughts, satisfaction and company of divine people should be solicited to reach the door of salvation.
