Makar Sankranti marks the beginning of the holy phase of the sun’s transition into the zodiac sign of Maka (Capricorn). It is the festival of Sun God; the sun on this day starts its northward journey ie uttarayan, towards the Tropic of Cancer. It means the end of its southward journey, that is dakshinayan.
The night is believed to be a symbol of sin and wrongdoing, whereas day is regarded as the symbol of truth and faith. Hence all auspicious works are performed on Makar Sankranti as days become longer and nights become shorter.
To Hindus, the sun stands for enlightenment and the light of knowledge. Makar Sankranti has many significant lessons for us. We all should break away from the darkness of delusion and let the light within us shine bright. We all should grow in wisdom and knowledge just as the sun shines bright from this day. Sun stands for all ideals: Light, unity, equality and true selflessness.
The sun is the giver & the greatest karma yogi. Because it never asks for any rewards for all that it gives us. Can you even imagine what will happen, If the sun stops giving light? During this holy festival, Learn to feel oneness with all creations and never be selfish. Commit yourself to tread the path of love, purity and forgiveness. If we all can learn this small lesson from the sun, it will make a big difference in our lives. It will make our lives shine with the divine lustre.
Also, it is a festival that celebrates the farmers. Those who have selflessly worked day and night to feed us. They are the ones that needs to be taken care off. It is immensely sad that thousand of farmers every year commit suicide. We are in a urgent need to do something about them, so that we may celebrate this season of harvest with great pride every year.
And the sweet taste of ‘Til, Gajak, Gur’ accounts for all.
It is also a festival of rising high and flow while keeping yourself grounded. Kites are the perfect symbol of it. Rise High but keep yourself grounded!
