Our scriptures have prescribed different Sadhanas (means of accomplishments) for different ages. Tapa (penance) is for Krita age, Dnayan (knowledge) for Treta age, Yagya (sacrifice) for Dwapara age and Daan (Charity) for Kali (present) age.
If there is one quality that is essential to the character of man, it is the virtue of charity. Out of all the charities, feeding the food to someone has given a significant importance in Hinduism. Nothing is more important than the ability to give and give wholeheartedly. In the Indian tradition food is indeed worshipped as Ann- Devta and Ann-Daata, the giver of food, is held in very high esteem. In our tradition which seems now forgotten, if anyone poor comes to your door, you are supposed not to turn her/him away. Therefore sharing food with the poor is one of the greatest acts of spirituality and humanity. The other perspective that is widely practiced is donating food on the significant day’s of one’s life. Doing this manifolds the blessings.
Each & every person is gifted with different types of Capabilities & Resources like Knowledge, Money, Strength, Skills etc. Instead of just utilizing the god gifted resources for one’s own needs, it’s every person’s moral duty to use it for the benefit of others too. Charity (Donation) is the right way of spending money because it adds up to one’s Karma.
As per Taittiriya Upanishad: “Food is Brahma; from food, all the creatures are born and by the food they live, and after having departed, into food again they enter.” In the Hindu religion, one gets tremendous ‘Punya’ (blessings) and good karmas by feeding the poor.
Food is a commodity absolutely mandatory for survival. A person needs to eat well to be able to sustain and function. Celebrate your birthday or wedding anniversary by feeding the . Celebrate your wedding anniversary or any other special occasion also by feeding hungry children or poor. Make your occasion more auspicious!
Vishwa Jagriti Mission has been encouraging everyone to share their special days including: birthdays & anniversaries and other significant days like death anniversary of a family member by feeding the Rishikumars of our Gurukuls and members of our old age homes under the ‘Annapurna Yojna’.
The blessings will manifold as the Rishikumars will perform Yagya & Poojan in the said name. It will be gracious if the donors themselves will come at the ashram and be a part of all this while also feeding the cows as a part of the ritual. Also, getting yourself clicked while doing all this will leave you with lifetime memories.
